This week I visited Jordan Griska's impressive studio, housed in an 1870s trolley shed in West Philadelphia. Jordan's installation for Eastern State Penitentiary, Separate System, is nearly complete on the floor of the studio. It's a work of extraordinary scale. It's beautiful and truly impressive. Jordan is completing his piece and it will be on display April 8th. The work is worth the wait.
The finished piece will weigh about a ton and fill an Eastern State cell in Cellblock 8. Visitors will be able to enter the piece and walk around inside. Karen Schmidt's wonderful installation, Cozy, is already complete and occupies the cell facing Jordan's.
Separate System will be on view (with all other artist installations) during all public hours. There will be a reception for the artists on Friday, May 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
