My name is Mackenzie Warren and I am an intern here at ESP. My main obligation is to index (which involves reading, summarizing, and cataloging) articles from The Umpire, an inmate written newspaper, during 1917. Sometimes I find pieces of literary gold, like this poem, that just make me laugh.
Ode to Mr. Mouse
I wake in the night,
I hear a noise so queer.
It's the little gray mouse
That most females fear.
I lay quietly down,
But around the room peep,
And hear the sound of gnawing paper
As the penitentiary sleeps
-- Inmate B-8312
Isn't that adorable?!
