SNo-verwhelming Winter at the Pen

Posted: February 02, 2011

The record-breaking snowfall this winter has many Philadelphians upset. Unplowed streets, unsalted sidewalks, and underwhelming cleanup efforts make for unhappy citizens.

Here at Eastern State, though, we are embracing the usually dreaded wintry mix. The prison, which sometimes has a habit of appearing dreary and uninviting, looks rather beautiful swaddled in a massive 11-acre blanket of white powder. Snow falls through skylights into individual cells and sets the perfect stage for our annual Winter Adventure Tours.

Snowy CellIf anything, the weather enables a more enriched visitor experience. Tours are limited to 25 people but are frequently attended by even smaller groups than that, allowing for more questions, better discussions, and a glimpse at the practically deserted penitentiary complex.

For those of you who haven’t already done so, I highly recommend visiting ESP in the snow before it’s all gone. And hurry, because Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring!
