A Tour Guide's winter accoutrements

Posted: April 04, 2011

Spring has finally arrived at Eastern State but the memory of winter is not forgotten. In the cold winter of Philadelphia, being able to remain warm and safe is doubly challenging at Eastern State. Yes, this building that was once a grand experiment in design and technology 180 years ago has no integrated heating system that works today.

Our needs to meet these challenging winter conditions show up in our winter shopping list at

hot coffee
hot tea
hot lunch
wool socks
thermos
long underwear (wool, performance synthetic)
fleece vest
sweater
scarf
black gloves
warm insulated and waterproof boots
snow shovels, well no because the historic site provides those
toe heaters
hand warmers
pictures of warm sandy beaches
cough drops
hot sauce

Every winter we stand ready to ward off the cold and frostbite to be able to meet the demand of people who want to know about this building and why it is important. Now, time to think spring!
